Pete Davies attended the station seven minutes late for his interview with Yvonne and Dewi.

Given what she had been told by Ted’s wife, Rhonda, the DI was not surprised. She made a point of looking at her watch, letting him know his tardiness has not escaped her.

“Good afternoon, Peter,” she said, as she lead him into the interview room; observing the beads of sweat on his temple and the tremor in the arm which held his coat. “Please, take a seat. We’re just waiting for my colleague, DS Hughes, to join us.”

“Fine.” He grunted as though to clear his throat, but Yvonne suspected it was more about covering nervousness. She set about organising her papers, not looking up, allowing him time to settle and drink a little water.

Dewi rushed in, giving the DI a nod before settling down next to her.

“Welcome, Mr Davies.” Yvonne sat back in her chair. “Thank you for coming in at such short notice. I know you have to get back to work, so we will keep this as brief as we can.”

“Thank you.” He licked his upper lip, eyes flicking from the DI to Dewi and back.

“Pete… Can I call you that?”

“Yes, of course you can.” He rubbed his forehead with the back of his hand.

“Tell me about your working relationship with Ted. How did you two get on? What did your typical work day entail?”

“We got on great. We really did. Yeah, we did...” He nodded for emphasis, but his chest heaved, and his sighs belied his affirmations.

“And how would you begin your day at Riverdale?”

“Well, it would depend if our employer was home… If he was, we would usually arrive around eight in the morning to do the first checks of the day. We would split up, with one of us checking the grounds and vehicles, and the other checking the house and smaller buildings. We would meet up for tea break, and then one of us would be in charge of the gates and grounds, and the other would monitor the house.”

“What about when your employer wasn’t home?”

“We would take it in turns to do a night shift. We did those solo. Whoever worked the night shift would usually go home after the morning tea break. So we would start the day shift together to discuss any important issues during the handover.”

“I’m trying to understand the hours you each worked here.” The DI frowned in concentration. “So, say you worked the night shift…”

“Okay…”

“You would stay until when? Mid-morning?”

“Yes, I would stay until the morning checks had been done. Then Ted would take over from me while I went home to catch up on sleep, and so on. I would come back at eight the next evening for the night shift again. And Ted would go home.”

“So you would both be working long shifts while your employer was away. Am I right?”

“Yes, that’s correct. We were paid time and a half for a night shift.”

“What happened when Mr Rothwell was home?”

“In that case, we both worked during the day, usually eight in the morning until six at night.
